Cycle Brewing will close their St. Petersburg, Florida brewery this month after 12 years of operation.
One of Florida’s most beloved breweries and the first craft brewery in St. Petersburg is closing this month, founder Doug Dozark announced on X. The brewery will be replaced by a British-themed Green Turtle Brewery in the same location.
The road to what would be Cycle Brewing started in 2009 in Gulfport, where Dozark was brewing beer in his mother’s restaurant kitchen on the weekends while brewing beer at Cigar City Brewing.
Cycle officially hit the St. Pete scene in 2013 now legendary beers like Rare Dos, Cream and Sugar, and Crank, as well as popular “Days of the Week”-named beers. The brewery is currently awaiting to sell its lease at 534 Central Avenue – which currently ends on May 31, 2026, to the new Green Turtle concept. The brewing equipment, taproom, and bar will go with the lease change.
Why?
It’s increasingly hard to spin the current state of the beer industry as anything other than a “downturn.” The Brewers Association’s recent report on 2024 production found that 2024 was the first year since 2005 (1,447 breweries) where the overall number of operating craft breweries declined nationwide. The total number of breweries in the U.S. dropped to 9,680, down from 9,747 in 2023. Both craft and big beer volumes have declined over the past year.
Dozark has mentioned on several occasions and in Instagram Live videos that craft beer – especially Cycle Brewing’s unique and loved way of brewing beer doesn’t have the same appeal as it did a few years ago. Dozark is disenchanted, to say the least.
Bottle stock for sale
Due to Dozark and Cycle’s barrel-aging program, there is still a stock of barrel-aging offerings he plans on selling at a retail location going forward post-taproom operation.
Dozark hasn’t mentioned what his plans are post-Cycle Brewing.
