Julia Wolf nods to a vengeful cult classic with “Jennifer’s Body”

Before she became a viral artist, Julia Wolf almost gave up music to open a pizza shop in Italy with her father. Instead, the Long Island native continued on the path and will release her second album, Pressure, on May 23 via AWAL.

The upcoming LP reflects the pressure chamber of a working musician, feeling suffocated by infinite expectations and critique. “I wasn’t feeling seen or accepted,” Wolf explains. “So I wanted this album to really express the emotions that came with that: the doubt, the lack of confidence, the comparing myself to literally everyone that breathes. This was my chance to really lay it all out and be the most honest I’ve ever been.”

That soulful vulnerability comes alive in her latest song, “Jennifer’s Body,” whose title references the 2009 revenge flick written by Diablo Cody (which went from a flop to a cult classic). Its video was created by Wolf and frequent collaborator Tanner Barry, comprising found footage from their phones after they dipped from the set of her “In My Room” video. “I wrote ‘Jennifer’s Body’ to be honest about my self-consciousness and doubt,” she tells AP. “No matter how much love someone gives me, I always drown in the sea of comparison and feel I don’t deserve it. But someone like ‘Jennifer’ does; to me, someone like her deserves it all.”
