Representative Nick Kupper and Nico Delgado.

A young conservative is doing his part to save his fellow Gen Zers from paying Arizona state income tax.

Over the last three months, Nico Delgado, an 18-year-old member of Generation Z, has been working with Arizona State Representative Nick Kupper (R-LD25) on legislation that would exempt individuals under 18 years of age from Arizona state income tax if their Arizona gross income is $50,000 or less in a taxable year, regardless of the source or nature of the income.

We sat down with Delgado to discuss Representative Kupper’s legislation.

Q: What motivated you to introduce this legislation in the first place?

A: I know what it’s like to be a teenager getting your first job and to work your butt off to save money for your future. Young people need to save more money now to have a fair start at life than ever before. There are many teens that work hard to help provide for their families and help pay the bills. This piece of legislation will help every single Arizonan under 18 for years to come.

Q: Can you explain why you’ve set the cap at $50,000?

A: Representative Kupper and I wanted this legislation to affect as many teens as possible while also closing possible loopholes regarding parents taking advantage of this for themselves.

Q: What kind of impact are you hoping this policy will have once it’s implemented?

A: I hope to see young people save money for their futures so that being able to own a home is no longer thought of as an unachievable goal. I want this legislation to introduce the American dream to my generation and to all future generations.

Q: How have people on the ground been responding to your bill so far?

A: The people of Arizona know that our nation was founded on the principle of no taxation without representation. Young people are hopeful that the State Senate and Governor are going to do everything they can to give kids a head start on life.

Q: If you had the chance to sit down with the Governor about this bill, what message would you want to convey to her?

A: I want the Governor to know that our youth is counting on her to give future generations a chance to save money for their futures. This is not a partisan issue, it passed 45-15 in the House, a bipartisan supermajority. This is a call to action for you Governor Hobbs. Don’t let us down, we are counting on you.
