Merpire Announces Debut Album ‘Milk Pool’, Shares ‘Bigger’

Merpire has detailed her debut studio album, entitled Milk Pool. The 11-track effort is set to be released independently on Friday, July 4th. To coincide with the album’s announcement, its second single ‘Bigger’ has also been released. It follows on from ‘Premonition’, the album’s lead single, which dropped back in February and marked the singer-songwriter’s first new music since 2021.

In a press statement, Rhiannon Atkinson-Howatt – the Melbourne singer-songwriter behind the project – said that ‘Bigger’ was “the most exciting song on the record”, and attributed a lot of that to her co-writer and co-producer James Dring’s work on it. “I gave him complete freedom to do whatever he wanted production-wise with the 3 stems I gave him – my vocal, the guitar chords and the main guitar riff,” she said. “I was in love with the first thing he sent back. He nailed the dark, sexy, sinister mood. I couldn’t be happier with the result.”

Although Atkinson-Howatt had some early sessions in-person with Dring circa 2022 at his London studio, the majority of Milk Pool was recorded at Melrose Place Studios in Melbourne. It features contributions from fellow singer-songwriter Elizabeth M. Drummond and Alex Lahey/Angie McMahon drummer Jess Ellwood, as well as her co-producer James Seymour.
