2025 TaylorMade P790 Irons Review

50 Words or Less

The 2025 TaylorMade P790 irons are super fun to play with incredible length and impressive forgiveness.  Clean, player-approved looks.  Improved, consistent feel.

Introduction

Now in their fifth generation, the TaylorMade P790 irons are well on their way to standing alone in golf equipment history.  They’re largely responsible for the creation of a new category – players distance irons – and they’ve been at or near the top of the sales charts since their first release in 2017.  That kind of success spawns countless imitators.  It also makes it hard to create the next generation for fear of messing with success.  I tested the 2025 TaylorMade P790 irons to see if TM could make meaningful improvements without losing the things that make this set great.

Looks

A major part of the P790’s success is its clean look, and that’s only been enhanced in the 2025 TaylorMade P790 irons.  In the bag, the design mimics the P770 irons with “P790” engraved across a mirrored backbar.  The Tour Satin Scratch finish looks premium as well as providing more durability.  Only the TaylorMade “T” logo on the edge of the toe disrupts machined texture across the rest of the back of the club.  The 2025 TaylorMade P790 irons will definitely turn heads on the course.

At address, the new P790 has a thinner top line than the previous version, pushing them even closer to TaylorMade’s other P-Series irons.  This set is average in heel-to-toe length with modest, progressive offset.  As you can see above, the leading edge is almost perfectly straight in the long irons, transitioning into something slightly more rounded in the scoring irons.

Sound & Feel

TM put a major focus on feel for the 2025 TaylorMade P790 irons, noting that they tried to optimize each head using modal analysis.  What I noticed is a more consistent feel throughout the set.  The 2023 P790 changed from softer and quieter in the short irons to more explosive and louder in the long irons.  This latest generation maintains a quieter sound and softer feel throughout the set.

Striking a tour caliber golf ball, I noted a soft feel in the hands with a gentle, crisp “click.”  Off center strikes feel firmer, and the sound gets a slightly harder edge.  This difference is a little more pronounced in the longer irons due to the faster speed and more violent collision.  Overall, these irons provide solid feedback, distinguishing misses from pure strikes and communicating the exact location of the strike through the hands.

Performance

While the P790s have many virtues, the primary driver of their popularity is distance.  That has not been overlooked with the 2025 TaylorMade P790 irons.  This new generation feature a new face material that’s 20% stronger than the 2023 version which allows the face to be thinner.  Why should you want a thinner face?  It allows for faster ball speeds and a sweet spot that TM claims is up to 24% larger.

In my testing, I saw ball speed that is among the very fastest I’ve ever recorded.  On center, the ball rockets off the club face.  What’s more impressive, however, is the way that speed is retained on mishits.  I hit a near-shank with the 7I that flew 173 yards.  That’s thanks not only to the thinner face but to the tungsten toe weight in the 4I-7I which makes the club head more stable through impact.

What TaylorMade continues to fine tune and improve with the 2025 P790 irons is the CG, launch, and spin.  Their FLTD CG places the CG higher in the 8I-AW to produce a more controlled ball flight.  In the scoring irons, the ball launches high and lands softly, but it doesn’t balloon or get battered by the wind.  The longer irons feature a lower CG and the Thru-Slot Speed Pocket to launch the ball higher and more easily.  Even the longest 7I shots I was hitting – which were obscene – were landing at 46 degrees, which is plenty steep to hold most greens.

Distance gapping was another focus for the 2025 TaylorMade P790 irons.  I noticed an improvement in this area, but I will continue to strongly recommend that anyone looking at this set – or any distance iron – think seriously about their set make up.  I have above average swing speed, but I did not get a consistent, meaningful distance gap between the 4I and 5I: the launch was simply too low.

While there are fitting questions that need to be considered, they don’t overshadow the joy of hitting the 2025 TaylorMade P790 irons.  These irons go forever on pure strikes and produce extremely good results on mishits.  Players with the ability can shape the ball or play point-and-shoot golf.  You don’t have to spend much time with this set to understand why it’s been such a huge success for the last eight years.

Conclusion

The 2025 TaylorMade P790 irons offer golfers everything they’ve loved about this model while simultaneously making small, meaningful improvements.  If you want to hit your 7I longer than ever before and enjoy the confidence of knowing your mishits will turn out ok, this is the iron set for you.
