Ian Wright criticises David Raya after Arsenal draw vs Everton

Arsenal shared the spoils against Everton in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.

The Gunners controlled proceedings in the opening half and eventually scored in the 34th minute.

Leandro Trossard found the back of the net on the counter-attack from a Raheem Sterling assist.

Arsenal were unlucky to concede from a soft penalty after the break. They could not find the winner.

Speaking after the stalemate, Gunners legend Ian Wright was not pleased with the penalty-saving skills of goalkeeper David Raya.

The Spaniard has been guilty of moving too quickly at times, and there was another repeat against Everton’s Iliman Ndiaye.

Raya took a couple of steps to the left. Ndiaye scored with relative ease with a low shot towards the right side of the Spaniard’s net.

Speaking to Premier League productions (via Metro): Wright said that Raya has been making the same mistake with recent spotkicks.

The Gunners favourite highlighted that the Spaniard is wrong with his technique and expressed his concern over the repetition.

He said: “I saw something the other day with David Raya on the penalties.

“He seems to be taking this massive leap to one side, which is almost giving the penalty taker so much time to say, well, he’s definitely going that way.

“I’ve seen penalties being taken against him recently where he’s continually going the wrong way.

“I think his form in trying to save them, I think it’s wrong, simply because he’s going so far, he’s making such a commitment to one side.

“He’s giving it up, especially if you’ve got a longer run up, you can actually see him a yard away from the ball, he’s gone, he’s [Ndiaye] not kicked the ball yet and David Raya has taken two steps to his right.

“You’re going to see that when you’re running up, you can see he’s committed to one side. That’s the only thing I look at and worries me with the penalties being taken against us at the minute.”

Raya was exceptional in the penalty shoot-out win over Porto in the Champions League round of 16 last term.

However, we are yet to see such consistency. The £34 million-rated star was poor in the penalty shoot-out loss to Manchester United in the FA Cup third round back in January.

He was guilty of moving too early for almost every spot-kick, and United had an easy job converting their penalties. In our view, Raya must be more patient in such situations.

Arsenal are set to host Real Madrid in the first leg of the Champions League quarter-final on Tuesday night before the second leg at the Bernabeu eight days later.

If the tie were to go to penalties, Raya’s current tactics could be a massive disadvantage compared to Thibaut Courtois, who is one of the best in similar scenarios.

Goalkeeping coach Inaki Cana must sort out Raya’s positioning on penalties in the next training session.
