What I Wish You Knew About My Generation | Gen Z

[ad_1]

Over the next several weeks, you’ll hear from several women writing about what they wish others knew about their generations. Up first, you’ll hear from Georgia Williams (Gen Z)! Stay tuned for articles written by a Millennial, Gen Xer, Baby Boomer, and Silent.

Dearest generations ahead of me,

What I wish you knew about us is we aren’t what you think, or maybe what they’ve even said about us. Or possibly what you’ve assumed to be true.

In a way, this reminds me of the church—and Christians. It wouldn’t be fair to label all churches and Christians as bad, toxic, or “corrupt” in their thinking, theology, or ways. Just as there isn’t a perfect Christian, you won’t find the perfect generation. All churches and all generations are filled with imperfect people. But throughout churches across America and around the world, and generations of new and those of old, Christ is the common thread that takes us all from grave clothes to a new robe of righteousness if we say yes to His Son. So it’s true what they say. What you look for, you’re sure to find more of. If you focus on the defeats, the differences of why your generation was better than Gen Z because you made your own butter, your childhood was memories without seatbelts, or even walking through an airport without high security, you’re definitely going to see nothing but drastic differences.

But today, I want you to see my point of view. You may notice that my cup is half full. But if you take a closer look, it’s all the way full, actually overflowing. Half with water, and the other half with air. Although you can’t see it, it doesn’t mean it’s not there. And that’s just like the Lord in my generation. Media has a lot to say about us, but the God that made a generation of image bearers during this time, tells me that He has a specific assignment for His children born for such a time as this.

Gen Z. The end of the alphabet but not the end of hope. Our hope should be firmly rooted in Jesus, so if we want to see a change in Gen Z, dearest generations before me, share Jesus with us.

I know you may come from the silent eras where you kept matters under the rug, but what you have, I need. We need. There is a generation that at a click of a button can find every news headline, type anything into TikTok, and generate more answers than they had bandwidth for their question, yet still they’re searching. My generation is searching for authenticity and it’s actually in the very ones that may be the ones judging us. Just because we’re younger, we think we often know it all because of the knowledge around us, but that doesn’t mean we’re wise. We need you. Just because the trends have changed and somehow circle back again doesn’t mean your input isn’t significant. Once again, we need you.

But the street goes two ways. You see, you also need us. We want to teach you what we’ve been blessed to have been born into. Have you reached out for help or insight? Maybe you haven’t because you believed the lie there was nothing for you to give. Well, now that you know that isn’t the case—go and be a generation breaker. The time is now to build a bridge between what was, what is, and what is to come as the foundation is built firmly on Christ!

At no other time have we had more resources. And yes, we can do with that power a lot of things, so why don’t we use our resources to share Jesus? Countless people groups still haven’t heard God’s Word in their native tongues, and organizations are out there that we can partner with today to be a part of biblical change before He returns! We can be a part of the change we want to see by using social media to be a media of spiritual influence—by sharing more about God’s Word and what He’s doing in our lives than occasional family picture updates. We love to see your generations grow, but plant deeper roots so we can glean from your fruit!

The fact that you and I are both here, during this era, a time where our lives cross and overlap, is significant. I pray your eyes will be opened to see its beauty. Is there a young girl at your church you could mentor? Oh, don’t be scared by this word, just open up your heart to her world and invite her into yours. Is there a granddaughter you should spend time asking deeper questions to? Is there a Gen Z in the neighborhood you could pass down a family recipe to and swap stories about the beauty and differences of your childhood?

Time is fleeting, but the wisdom you hold from what you’ve learned in your generation can carry on. And the new budding technologies, the new world we’re learning to navigate ourselves as Gen Z, ask us about it. Show me where I can serve you, and tell me where I can sit for a moment and learn more before I speak.

In the end, life is quite fascinating, isn’t it? You and me, here for such a time as this? Why us? Why now? Well, if not you, then who? If not now, then when?

Your time today has meant the world. You could be doing anything else right now, but you’re here, hearing the heartbeat of the next generation. Thank you.

You are needed, loved, and thank you for being open to hearing from,

Georgia Williams, Gen Z

Fun facts about Gen Z:

  1. Gen Z represents the most racially and ethnically diverse generation in U.S. history.
  2. Gen Z brings their values and beliefs into the workforce. (This is GOOD as we raise up more disciple-makers in Christ!)
  3. Gen Z is full of independent learners (maybe because phones are so resourceful, and we don’t have to scroll through a library book—plus at the end of our high school and college eras we were home due to COVID). This can be a great thing! Independence rather than dependence will create a strong generation.
  4. Gen Z has a voice and is comfortable expressing their opinions (may we be the generation that stands for truth and righteousness!).
