NY Times
bestselling author of six books for teens, Morgan Matson, has struck some
wonderful balladic notes of rhythm and narrative (along with the sweet harmony
of teen love) to create a compelling read in The Ballad Of Darcy &
Russell
.

The story
begins with Darcy travelling home to LA from a music festival, when the bus
breaks down. Both she and Russell find themselves stranded at a fairly remote
bus station, where she asks to borrow his phone charger. And so the adventure
begins.

For a
narrative set over the course of just 24 hours, a lot goes on.
Without giving
the storyline away, suffice to say that there are global rock stars, Mexican
feasts, swimming pool break-ins and security interrogations … all while our two
main characters get to know each other in a funny, intense and very visceral
way.

Matson has
created characters who feel totally authentic and friendly, like people you
might strike up a chat with in a long queue.

Our
protagonist, Darcy, has two best friends who do not appear ‘for reals’ at all
through the book, yet are totally present inside her head. They guide every
move she makes and many of the thoughts she thinks.

And while
Darcy is heavily into rom-coms and bangs on a lot about the idea of love at
first sight, her invisible friends are not so easily swayed. Which all makes
for a rather dynamic and interesting read.

Through the ups and downs of the storyline, the vibe between Darcy and Russell
is intense, funny and strong. There’s a lovely dynamic and frisson between
them, and the crafting of the narrative allows the reader to live deeply into
both of their perspectives.

I really loved this book. It’s compelling, complex, upbeat and appealing in all
the best ways. It flows beautifully from one moment of chaos to the next, with
surprises and visuals that would make a great movie script, too.

Highly
recommended.
