A tree in the forest

A professional photographer I follow on Instagram, who shares tips with all of us amateurs, wrote in his post this past week about how many of us too often focus on the “big picture” when taking photographs. To illustrate this, he showed 2 shots taken during a photo tour he led along the Ganges in India: one was a beautiful photo of the crowds along the river and the other was a still more beautiful reflection off the water – a small part of that larger scene.

His point was that we miss these details when we’re too attracted to the big picture. “You see the forest, but you don’t see the trees,” he wrote.

Well, I thought I was better than that. At least I did until I came across this photo taken last weekend. Did I see this young lady looking right at me? Nope! Did I even notice that my camera’s autofocus had fixed on her and not what I was trying to capture? Nope!

In that moment, she was a lot like a tree in the forest.
And the forest was all I saw.
