Love, Lasagna, and a Housebutch: A Perfect Swap
5 out of 5 stars
Swapping a house for a month is one thing—swapping expectations is another. Houseswap 101 by Jaime Clevenger delivers a slow-burn romance that starts with tension, tangled garden mishaps, and a whole lot of home improvement, only to transform into something so heartwarming it had me tearing up by the end. Abby Craden’s narration? Absolute perfection. She gives life to Robbie and Devyn with a warmth that makes every moment feel personal.
Right from the start, Robbie and Devyn are an unlikely pair. Robbie just wants a break from Seattle’s endless rain, and Devyn needs someone—anyone—to tackle her home to-do list. But what begins as a practical arrangement soon turns into something much more charming (and chaotic) when Robbie, in true rom-com fashion, accidentally destroys Devyn’s beloved pollinator garden. Oops.
But here’s the thing about Jaime Clevenger’s writing: she makes you fall for the characters before they fall for each other. Robbie, with her lasagna-making skills and fixer-upper determination, sneaks her way into Devyn’s world in a way that feels so natural. And Devyn? She’s got walls up, but watching them slowly come down is so satisfying. The pacing is a perfect slow burn—just the right mix of romantic tension and emotional depth.
By the time these two started realizing just how much they’d come to rely on each other, I was fully invested. The push and pull of their dynamic felt authentic, and every little moment—from shared meals to unexpected confessions—built into something truly special. The final stretch of the book had me misty-eyed with just how beautifully everything came together.
If you’ve read Clevenger’s other books, like Three Reasons to Say Yes or A Convenient Arrangement, you’ll know she has a way of crafting love stories that feel deeply personal and utterly rewarding. This one is no exception. And with Abby Craden’s narration bringing every emotion to life, it’s a must-listen.
Sweet, heartfelt, and packed with just the right amount of home improvement chaos, Houseswap 101 is an audiobook I’d happily swap places with again. Highly recommend!
Book Description:
Working remote on a houseboat in Seattle sounds amazing-until it rains for four months straight. Now Robbie Price would love any excuse to get on dry land. When a co-worker who’s going through a divorce suggests a house swap, Robbie can’t pass up the chance to spend four weeks in a beach cottage in San Diego. All she needs to do is avoid her co-worker’s ex-wife and finish a few home improvement projects.
Devyn Lancaster never expected to get divorced, but she isn’t exactly unhappy about how things have turned out. She has more time to focus on being a doctor in a busy hospital and can let go of trying to be a better wife. Still, there are some things at home she’d like someone to take care of. Like basically everything she has no time to do.
Robbie Price is the last person Devyn expects to want to keep around-especially after Robbie accidentally weed whacks her pollinator garden. But Robbie makes a mean lasagna and in one weekend completes half the items on her to-do list.
Soon Devyn has to admit she likes having a temporary housebutch. And Robbie can’t deny the house swap turned out to be a perfect change. Saying goodbye at the end of the month might be harder than either realize.
