It’s the 2020s, so of course we’re looking back to the 20th century for a little inspiration. And Art Deco nails are the perfect example. A style defined by Gatsby-era glitz and glam, these manicures balance architectural details with an undeniably luxurious edge. With a color palette defined by rich golds, blacks and emeralds, this is a look that takes old money all the way back to the roaring 1920s. You can think of this era’s style as the new money of the day. This is where luxury was loud instead of quiet and maximalist looks were in. Trade in minimalism for a little maximal glam with these Gatsby-worthy Art Deco nails.
What is Art Deco?
Beginning in Paris post WWI, Art Deco is a style that translates across architecture, product design and the visual arts. Known for bold geometric patterns that rely on symmetry and sharp, clean shapes, this style is directly influenced by everything from skyscrapers to ocean liners. Embodying the grandiose and the luxurious, Art Deco reached a huge level of popularity during the 1920s, when it became synonymous with glamour, luxury and wealth.
This style also stands in contrast to Art Nouveau, which drew inspiration from nature and organic forms. Instead of depicting animals and plants, Art Deco was known for the industrious look of the machine age. As a result, much of what we consider to be Art Deco is streamlined, geometric and bold.
