Hazmat warning issued for Hilbert residents following ‘potentially dangerous’ smoke at rubbish tip fire
Residents in Perth’s south east have been warned of “potentially dangerous” smoke after a blaze ignited at a local rubbish tip.
A hazmat warning is in place for residents in Hilbert in the City of Armadale, with the smoke blowing in a westerly direction.
There is also smoke blowing across Tonkin Highway.
A Department of Fire and Emergency Services spokesperson said the fire was first reported about 1am on Wednesday near Hopkinson Road, Hilbert.
It is understood to have started at the City of Armadale’s Landfill and Recycling Facility.
“As a precautionary measure, people in the area should remain inside, out of the smoke or fumes, with doors and windows,” DFES said.
“Air conditioners should also be switched off.
“People should take away from the area.
“If you are already in the area take advice from emergency services personnel.”
Firefighters are on the scene fighting the blaze.
Career Fire Service, Bush Fire Service and Volunteer Fire and Rescue Service firefighters are site.
No roads have been closed, but motorists have been asked to avoid the area, reduce speed and drive carefully.
