My Filtered Recipe Search can help you plan Thanksgiving – Kalyn’s Kitchen

When you’re planning a meal where you need to accommodate different dietary needs the Filtered Recipe Search can really help with that!

I haven’t gotten fully focused on Thanksgiving yet, because last week I came home from an amazing 17 day trip to Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam! But even though Thanksgiving is late this year, people on the Kalyn’s Kitchen Facebook Page who need a dinner that will work for family members with certain diets like gluten-free, dairy-free, or vegan have started asking me for recipe suggestions.

So for everyone who needs to plan around diet types you’re not normally cooking for, I’m reminding you that my site has a Filtered Recipe Search where you can sort the recipes by course, by diet, by method, and by ingredient, choosing as many of those as you need to narrow it down. I admit that this featured is easiest to use on a desktop computer, but even if you’re accessing my site by mobile or tablet, with practice you can make it work.

The Filtered Recipe Search was a new featured that was part of a blog re-design in October 2021, and at that time I shared a post about it. Since then I’ve wondered many times how many people really know how to use this, so I’m happy to spotlight it again, and hope it will be useful for some of you.

What types of Diets does the Filtered Recipe Search Help With?

The Filtered Recipe Search accommodates the diet type categories I have on the site including Keto, Low-Carb, Gluten-Free, Dairy-Free, South Beach Diet (Original), and Vegetarian and you can filter by more than one diet type at once. The most commonly requested diet I don’t have a separate category for is Vegan, so as an example of how the recipe search works, to get recipes that are Vegan you would choose Vegetarian and Dairy-Free.

Besides helping you make food that fits more than one dietary need, the Filtered Recipe Search is also fun when you just need help thinking what to cook. For example if you have chicken and want to use the oven you could filter by low-carb, chicken, gluten-free, and oven dinner to get a meal that fits all those parameters. Have fun experimenting!

How to Use the Filtered Recipe Search:

Here are instructions for using the Filtered Recipe Search:

  1. When you go to the Filtered Search page you’ll see the latest recipes with a check list of options where you can make selections. (To get to that page, on DESKTOP go to Home, Browse Recipes, and then Filtered Recipe Search. On MOBILE, tap start at Home, tap the stacked menu and choose the + sign by Browse Recipes, then Filtered Recipe Search, then Open Recipe Filters to see the checklist.)
  2. Click boxes to select the Course, Diet Type, Method, and Ingredients you want.
  3. Each item you select will narrow the search so you see only recipes that fit ALL those categories.
  4. I recommend starting with the choices that are most important to you, probably Ingredients and Diet Type.
  5. Then choose Course or Method if you want to narrow the results even more.
  6. (On mobile, you’ll want to click the X  at the top right to remove recipe filters to see your search results.)
  7. You can simply unselect something to go back to broader search results.
  8. If there’s a type of recipe you make often (like Casseroles) you can select that first, then narrow it down by diet type and ingredients.
  9. To start a new search, just select RESET at the bottom (on desktop) or use the back arrow (on mobile).
  10. I hope this is useful for you!

I hope you enjoy trying this feature!

Below is a final reminder of what the Filtered Recipe Search looks like when you’ve clicked to that page. Happy searching everyone, and let the Thanksgiving menu planning begin!
