Media Report: Vt. legislative working group recommends holding off on legalizing magic mushrooms
MONTPELIER, Vt. (WCAX) – A new report shows Vermont may not move forward — yet — on psychedelic therapy.
Mental health experts were part of a working group put together by the Legislature this year that studied whether to recommend legalizing psilocybin — or magic mushrooms — for therapeutic uses. National research shows positive results when it has been used to treat depression, anxiety, and PTSD. The group was not able to come to a consensus about whether Vermont should officially adopt a state program for psychedelic therapy. they say psilocybin is still under consideration by the Food and Drug Administration.
“Very promising results but very small sample sizes and so to be able to generalize that to the public is going to be important. So, having larger sample sizes or further studies to make sure we’re able to generate that information appropriately,” said Dr. Kelley Klein with the Vermont Department of Mental Health
The group suggests lawmakers extend the working group to continue their research. Meanwhile, voters in Massachusetts defeated a ballot initiative that would have legalized psychedelic mushrooms.
