Introduction:
Cyra: Could you please introduce yourself and tell us a bit about your writing background? What inspired you to become a writer, and how did your writing journey begin?
Michelle: Hi, Cyra, thank you for having me! I’m NYT and USA TODAY bestseller Michelle M. Pillow, a professional fiction author
known for my work in paranormal and sci-fi romance and urban fantasy. Over the years, I’ve written numerous books, creating immersive worlds filled with romance, intrigue, and supernatural elements. I need to emphasize to the young readers on your blog (and their parents) that all of my books are intended for adults aged 18+. That said, I’m excited to be here and to share some of my authorly knowledge with new writers. Even if you can’t read the books, I hope my answers help you on your own creative journeys.
My journey as a writer has been fueled by a love for storytelling and a fascination with the supernatural, and stems from a deep-seated love for reading. Growing up, I was an avid reader, constantly lost in the pages of different genres. This passion for stories
naturally evolved into a desire to create my own novels as I discovered the joy of building entire worlds and complex characters.
Creative Process:
Cyra: Could you share a glimpse into your creative process? How do you approach developing ideas and turning them into stories? Do you have any specific rituals or habits that help you get into the writing zone?
Michelle: My process often starts with a single idea or a “what if” question. From there, I build an outline to map out key plot points and character arcs. However, I also allow room for spontaneity, letting the characters guide the story as it develops. This balance between structure and flexibility helps me create dynamic narratives.
I do have a few rituals! Writing late at night when the world is quiet is one of my favorites. I also have a special set of ceramic mugs for my coffee, which helps set the tone for my writing sessions. Finding a comfortable spot, like my kitchen table or sitting on the couch, helps me get into the writing zone.
Writing Influences:
Cyra: Who are some of your favorite authors or literary influences, and how have they shaped your own writing style? Are there any books or works that have had a profound impact on your writing career?
Michelle: Anne Rice is a significant influence on my work. Her ability to blend complex relationships, fantasy, and supernatural elements seamlessly is something I greatly admire. Jane Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice” also had a profound impact, igniting my interest in history and complex character dynamics. Both authors have shaped my narrative style and inspired me to explore deep emotional themes within fantastical settings.
“Pride and Prejudice” by Jane Austen and “Travels with Charley” by John Steinbeck have both deeply influenced me. Austen’s elaborate character interactions and Steinbeck’s quest to portray America’s diverse landscapes and people have taught me the importance of detailed world-building and character development.
Overcoming Challenges:
Cyra: What challenges have you faced as a writer, and how did you overcome them? How do you handle writer’s block or periods of self-doubt?
Michelle: One of the biggest challenges has been balancing writing with personal life. It requires strict time management and setting boundaries to ensure productivity without burning out. Additionally, dealing with rejection and criticism is part of the journey. Overcoming these challenges involves persistence, self-belief, and constantly seeking ways to improve and grow.
Writer’s block and self-doubt are inevitable. To tackle them, I take breaks to clear my mind, often involving walks or spending time with family. Sometimes, discussing plot points with my husband or best friend can spark new ideas. Writing consistently, even when it’s difficult, helps maintain momentum and break through creative barriers.
Character Development:
Cyra: How do you approach developing compelling and relatable characters in your stories? Are there any specific themes or topics you enjoy exploring in your writing? Are there any strategies or exercises you use to ensure your characters feel authentic and three-dimensional? How do you ensure that your characters, especially Tamara, evolve in a way that feels natural and authentic to the readers? What do you hope readers take away from Tamara’s story and the world you’ve built in ‘Merely Mortal’?
Michelle: Developing compelling characters involves giving them distinct personalities, backgrounds, and motivations. I spend a lot of time understanding my characters’ desires and fears, which makes their actions and growth feel authentic. They need to have flaws and strengths that readers can relate to.
One effective strategy is to write detailed character backstories, even if not all details make it into the final story. This helps me understand their motivations and reactions. I also like to put my characters in hypothetical scenarios to see how they would react, which adds depth to their personalities.
Ensuring natural character evolution involves letting their experiences shape their growth. Tamara, for example, faces numerous challenges that force her to confront her fears and discover her true strengths. Her evolution is driven by her responses to these situations, making her growth feel organic.
I hope readers take away the importance of self-discovery and the quest for belonging. Tamara’s journey reflects the universal struggle to find one’s place in the world and understand one’s identity. Through her story, I aim to inspire readers to embrace their uniqueness and find strength in their individuality.
Creative Inspiration:
Cyra: Where do you find inspiration for your stories? Are there any specific themes or topics you enjoy exploring in your writing?
Michelle: Inspiration can come from anywhere – a conversation, a dream, a piece of art, or even a walk. I’m particularly drawn to exploring the intersections between the ordinary and the extraordinary, which often leads to intriguing story ideas.
Themes of identity, belonging, and self-discovery are central to my writing. I enjoy delving into the complexities of human emotions and relationships, especially against the backdrop of supernatural or fantastical elements.
Personal Reflection:
Cyra: Is there a particular book or project you are most proud of? Could you share the story behind it? What is the most rewarding aspect of being a writer for you?
Michelle: “Merely Mortal” is a project I’m particularly proud of. It marks a new direction in my writing, blending urban fantasy with deep emotional themes in a first-person narrative. The story behind it is rooted in my fascination with the interplay between mortal and supernatural realms, and the idea of an ordinary person navigating extraordinary circumstances.
The most rewarding aspect is connecting with readers. Hearing how my stories have impacted their lives or provided them with an escape is incredibly fulfilling. Knowing that my words can evoke emotions and create lasting memories is what keeps me going.
Also, getting the chance to meet the next generation of writers, like yourself, and hoping that my experience can somehow encourage young writers to pursue their dreams.
Editing and Revision:
Cyra: How important do you think the editing and revision process is for a writer? Could you share your approach to editing your own work? Do you have any suggestions for writers on how to improve their editing skills?
Michelle: Editing and revision are crucial. They transform a rough draft into a polished piece. My approach involves multiple rounds of editing – first, self-editing for major plot and character issues, and then working with professional editors for fine-tuning. Taking breaks between drafts helps me return with a fresh perspective. I also have beta readers and a review team. I want as many eyes as I can on the book before it is published.
My advice is to embrace the process and not rush it. Distance yourself from your work before editing to gain objectivity. Reading your work aloud can also help catch errors and awkward phrasing. Or having the computer read the book to you. Hearing it in another voice can help catch errors. And be open to feedback and willing to make necessary changes. Writing is such a personal thing, but you have to develop a thick skin to criticism. Not everyone is going to agree or like what you do, and that’s OK.
Publishing and Marketing:
Cyra: What has been your experience with the publishing industry? Any advice for aspiring authors on finding agents or publishers? How do you navigate the world of book marketing and promotion? Any tips for authors looking to build their audience?
Michelle: The publishing industry can be challenging but rewarding. My advice for aspiring authors is to do thorough research and be persistent. Networking and attending writing conferences can open doors. When submitting to agents or publishers, make sure your manuscript is polished, and your query letter is compelling. Also, know there is no one path in the writing world. Find the path that is right for you.
Book marketing involves a mix of online presence, social media engagement, and connecting with readers through events. Building a loyal audience takes time, so be patient and consistent. Genuinely engage with your readers and consider collaborations with other authors to reach new audiences.
Balancing Elements:
Cyra: How do you balance familiar elements with imaginative, magical ones to ensure the world feels both unique and relatable?
Michelle: Balancing these elements involves grounding the story in relatable human experiences while introducing magical aspects that enhance the narrative. Familiar settings and emotions make the story accessible, while imaginative elements add excitement and intrigue. It’s about creating a world that feels possible, even with its fantastical aspects.
Creation of the World:
Cyra: Can you describe the process of creating the world where the mortal and supernatural collide? What were your main sources of inspiration?
Michelle: It involves blending elements of the familiar with the fantastical. I started with the foundation of a recognizable urban setting and layered in supernatural aspects, ensuring they were seamlessly integrated. World-building involves detailed notes on the rules governing the supernatural elements and how they interact with the mortal world.
My inspiration came from a mix of mythology, folklore, and contemporary urban life. I drew on various supernatural legends and adapted them to fit within the modern world, creating a unique and immersive setting.
Everything you are interested in learning about as a writer can inform your work. Embrace learning and research.
Extending Relationships:
Cyra: ‘Merely Mortal’ is filled with tension and emotional growth. How did you approach writing these complex relationship dynamics?
Michelle: Writing complex relationship dynamics involves giving characters authentic emotions and motivations. I focus on their individual growth and how their interactions drive the relationship forward. Tension arises naturally from their conflicting motivations and external challenges, creating a dynamic and evolving relationships.
Plot and Pacing:
Cyra: What strategies do you use to maintain the balance between plot progression and character development, especially in a book that blends so many elements?
Michelle: To maintain balance, I ensure that character development is integral to the plot. Each plot point should challenge the characters and contribute to their growth. Pacing is key – mixing action with quieter moments of introspection allows for both plot progression and deep character development.
Reflections on Success:
Cyra: What does success mean to you as an author? How do you define and measure it?
Michelle: Success, to me, is creating stories that resonate with readers and leave a lasting impact. It’s about personal fulfillment and knowing that my work has touched lives. While commercial success is important to a working author, the true measure is the connection and emotional response from my readers.
Advice for Aspiring Authors:
Cyra: What advice would you give to aspiring authors who are just starting their writing journey? Are there any common mistakes you see new writers making, and how can they avoid them?
Michelle: Write passionately and persistently. Don’t be afraid of making mistakes – they’re part of the learning process. Read widely to understand different styles and genres. Most importantly, believe in your voice and keep writing, even when it gets tough.
If you feel like you have a story to tell, tell it. The world needs your unique voice. It doesn’t have to be perfect, especially that first draft, but it needs to be you.
Common mistakes include neglecting thorough editing and not seeking feedback. Avoid rushing to publish before your work is ready. Take the time to refine your craft, and don’t be afraid to ask for constructive criticism. Also, remember that rejection is not a reflection of your worth – keep moving forward.
Personal Touch:
Cyra: Can you share a fun fact about yourself that readers might not know? Do you have any hobbies or interests outside of writing that influence your stories?
Michelle: A fun fact about me is that I was a refugee extra on SyFy’s “Z Nation”. It was an exciting experience that gave me a behind-the-scenes look at TV production. I wanted to be a zombie, but I like to think of my character as a future zombie.
Outside of writing, I enjoy studying social anthropology, which helps me create rich, immersive worlds. I also love exploring new places and watching movies, which provide endless inspiration for my stories. Spending time with my family and talking about art with my daughter also influence my creative process.
Future Projects:
Cyra: What are you currently working on? Can you share any details about upcoming projects or books? Are there any new genres or themes you’re excited to explore in the future?
Michelle: I’m currently working on the second book in the Merely Mortal series, “Mostly Shattered”, which will be released in October 2024. It will delve deeper into Tamara’s journey and explore new threats and alliances in the supernatural world. Again, I have to stress that these books are intended for adults.
I’m always open to exploring new genres and themes. I’m particularly interested in delving back into historical epic fantasy, blending rich historical settings with magical elements. It’s an exciting way to combine my love for history and fantasy. But that project will have to wait as I’m still on Tamara’s journey.
Gratitude:
Cyra: Is there anything you’d like to say to your readers and fans who have supported you throughout your career?
Michelle: I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to my readers and fans. Your support and enthusiasm mean the world to me. Writing the Merely Mortal series has been an incredible journey, and I’m thrilled to share it with you. Thank you for believing in my stories and joining me on this adventure.
Community and Networking:
Cyra: How can readers stay connected with you and keep up with your latest work?
Michelle: Readers can connect with me online. I’m active on social media:
Cyra: Any final thoughts or messages you’d like to leave with aspiring authors or your readers?
Michelle:
To aspiring authors: Keep writing and never give up on your dreams. Every story has the power to make a difference. Keep reading. Keep learning. Keep writing.
To my readers: Thank you for your unwavering support. Your love for my stories fuels my passion for writing. I can’t wait to share more adventures with you!
