Descend into horror with these three comics featuring tales of fear, action, suspense, gore, dark humor, and unforgettable characters. Each story offers a different flavor of terror that is sure to chill your blood… or raise your hairs… or make you puke.
Bunn chatted with The Beat about the new comic and the campaign.
DEANNA DESTITO: Why did you choose Outland and Kickstarter for these titles?
CULLEN BUNN: I’ve known the good folks at Outland for a while now, and I’ve long been a fan of their approach to publishing. I love that they do prose, comics, RPGS, board games, and more. I like that they are open to all kinds of stories. I like how agile they are. A little while back, I started running their Outer Shadows horror imprint. We’ve published anthologies like Swords in the Shadows and novellas like Raze and comics like The Faraway. I have wanted, though, to do a series of comics inspired by my love of B horror movies. That line eventually became these three one-shot comics. I liked that Outland got as excited about the project as I was.
DESTITO: Can you tell us a little about each book?
BUNN: Absolutely! For these three books, I really wanted to explore different horror subgenres and styles.
THE WINDOW, illustrated by Luay Garwan (with colors by Paul Little and letters by Shannon Potratz), is a weird horror tale about a mother and her two sons who, after a familial upheaval, move into a small house. They discover that one of the windows in the house looks out into an alien world populated by horrible creatures. As they look out, the other creatures are looking in!
LONG PIG & AZRAEL, illustrated by Emmanuel Casallos (with colors by Paul Little and letters by Shannon Potratz), is a “horror on the road” story about a hapless fellow called Long Pig. He hitchhikes along dusty, deserted roads, always on the lookout for a warm meal… to feed to his demonic compatriot Azrael.
DEATH DUEL WITH THE CHAINSAW WITCHES, illustrated by Diogo Carvalho, is about a trio of heavy metal divas who are hunting a demon they unleashed upon a rock and roll festival.
DESTITO: How is it working with each creative team?
BUNN: It’s been an absolute joy. One of the things I like best about comics is the collaborative process. I like the different approaches each artist takes with one of my scripts. I enjoy the interaction. With these three books, I really wanted to get different artistic styles that would best represent the different stories, and I think I pulled that off! Each artist gives their story their own personal, unique spin. Picking the right artist for each project was tough, but I love the way it all worked out!
DESTITO: Why do you enjoy working in the horror genre?
BUNN: To me, writing horror is therapeutic. I’m able to address my own personal fears head on. No, I don’t fear getting devoured by a demon on the highway, but I can feel uneasy when I meet a stranger. I may not be living in a house with alien beings outside, but I have felt the fear of having my life turned upside down and being unsure what to do next. I haven’t fought demons at a concert, but I have struggled with mistakes I’ve made and the repercussions (for me and others) of those mistakes.
DESTITO: Horror isn’t one note and there are a many types of horror. What is your favorite?
BUNN: Oh, there are so, so many different varieties, and I like almost all of them! If you’re going to make me choose a favorite, it would likely be between action/horror and folk horror. Of those two, folk horror (especially with a small dash of cosmic horror on the side) would take the top spot!
DESTITO: Anything you can tease for backers?
BUNN: Each of these comics stands alone as a complete story, so (if you get all three) you will be able to dive right in to three different worlds! We’ve got some reward tiers that are really fun, including a “bloodied” tier that I will personally spatter with “blood” making each book completely unique! We’ve also got some cool surprises in mind for updates along the way. I can’t express how appreciative I am of everyone who helps make these three books a reality.
