The following article contains spoilers from the Agatha All Along finale, now streaming on Disney+.
From the first episode, Agatha All Along captured audiences with a murder mystery, a Scarlet Witch tease, and an abundance of witchcraft and magic. The series premiere was enough to silence most nay-sayers who questioned why Agatha Harkness needed her own series. Agatha All Along was strong from start to finish, but most viewers missed the clues that foreshadowed the series’ conclusion.
Agatha All Along does an incredible job of including hints about future plot points that, at the time, seemed random, meaningless, or like a one-off joke. Rio Vidal’s secret identity as Death was teased early in the series. Hints about Lilia’s true powers of divination were also laced throughout each episode leading up to her Witches’ Road trial. One of the series’ greatest feats was how seamlessly it teased the ending of the Road with no one noticing.
Agatha All Along Takes Fans Back Inside Maximoff Magic
First Westview… Then the Witches’ Road
The first two episodes of Agatha All Along focus on Billy befriending Agatha to convince her to travel the Witches’ Road with him. Intrigued by the young teen with a sigil protecting him from witches, Agatha agrees. Together, Billy (known as “Teen” until his identity as Wanda Maximoff’s son happened) and Agatha go in search of a coven to traverse the Road. They recruit Lilia Calderu (divination), Jennifer Kale (potions), and Alice Wu-Gulliver (protection). Agatha also passes off Sharon Davis as a green witch to round out their impromptu coven.
The majority of the rest of the series takes place on the Witches’ Road. Together, the coven traverses an enchanted and whimsical forest. They walk a path of blue leaves that leads them from one trial to the next. Sadly, a few members of the coven perish along the way. Sharon was the first to go, which wasn’t all that shocking, since she wasn’t a witch. Alice dies trying to protect Agatha and Lilia sacrifices herself to the Salem Seven to protect the rest of the coven.

Agatha All Along Episodes 8 & 9 Review: The Near-Perfect Finale Makes This Series the MCU’s Best One Yet
Agatha All Along revealed all the answers to its mysteries and set up the characters’ futures in what is likely the show’s series finale episodes.
The Witches’ Road is immersive, unforgiving, and so vividly real that the witches believe in it wholeheartedly. Episode 8 – “Follow Me My Friend / To Glory at the End” features Agatha, Billy, and Jen facing the Road’s final trial. Once free of the Road, Billy puts two and two together. After he returns home, he explores his bedroom and sees posters, figurines, and other items that look suspiciously similar to elements of the Road. Episode 9 – “Maiden Mother Crone” confirms his suspicions: Billy Maximoff, son of the Scarlet Witch, created the Road with his magic.
Just like Wanda unknowingly trapped the town of Westview in her hex, forcing the townsfolk to play with her fantasy, Billy unknowingly manifested the Witches’ Road. Maximoff magic is powerful creation magic capable of making anything from nothing, but Billy didn’t know what he was capable of. Agatha twigged this from the very beginning. When Billy finally realizes what he did, she congratulates him on doing something interesting with his magic, unlike Wanda. Agatha confirms that the Witches’ Road was never real and “The Ballad of the Witches’ Road” never meant anything.
“The Ballad was the trick. It was just a con to lure other gullible witches. The song doesn’t mean anything. It never did. The Road wasn’t real until you made it real.”

Agatha tells Billy that the Road didn’t exist until he made it real, so where did the legend come from? And why do so many witches believe in it? Well, the origins of the Witches’ Road can also be traced back to Agatha. In 1750, Agatha gave birth to her son, Nicholas “Nicky” Scratch. Nicholas was never supposed to survive. As Agatha went into labor, Death came to collect the child. Unable to ignore Agatha’s pleas, Death decides to spare Nicky, but she warns Agatha she will not be able to keep her son forever. Eventually, Death would claim him.
Episode 9 – “Mother Maiden Crone” spends the first half of its runtime showing Agatha and Nicky’s time together. Agatha killed witches to protect herself and Nicky. Nicky also helped Agatha run scams to make money and lure witches away from safety. Despite their questionable lifestyle, Agatha loved Nicky more than anything in the world. In turn, Nicky promised to always be by his mother’s side.

Where Will Agatha Harkness Appear Next? Every Possibility
Agatha Harkness’s Disney+ spinoff series, Agatha All Along, has come to an end. Where will audiences see Kathryn Hahn’s witch next in the MCU?
As Agatha and Nicky travel together, Nicky slowly starts creating a song, the first rendition of “The Ballad of the Witches’ Road.” Originally, it started as “walk, walk, walk the road, I walk the wind-y road.” Over time, Agatha helped Nicky develop the song, picking the perfect lyrics for it. What started as the wind-y road eventually became the Witches’ Road. Nicky sang the song in taverns and inns to make money for himself and his mother, but the ballad became bigger than its original intent. It took on a life of its own. The more witches who heard “The Ballad of the Witches’ Road,” the more witches started to believe in it.
The Witches’s Road became a legend promising witches great power, fortune, or other prizes waiting at the end. After Nicky’s death, witches began seeking Agatha out to lead them down the Witches’ Road. Agatha used their belief in the Road to con them. She would have curious witches assemble a coven and, together, they would sing the Ballad and try to conjure the Road. It never worked, so Agatha would insult and provoke them into attacking her. Once witches attacked her, she would consume their magic, keeping their power for herself. This is why Agatha became known as the only survivor of the Witches’ Road.
Agatha attempted this with her current coven as well. After singing the Ballad in her basement in Episode 2 – “Circle Sewn with Fate / Unlock Thy Hidden Gate” and failing to open the gate, Agatha goads the other witches for being too pathetic to conjure the Road. Unfortunately for Agatha, her new coven is smart enough not to attack her. She never thought the Road would appear because, as far as she knows, the Witches Road isn’t real. Agatha just wanted to steal their power to deal with Rio and the Salem Seven.
The Series Expertly Set This Plot Twist Up From the Beginning
As mentioned, Agatha All Along teased the Witches’ Road reveal from the very beginning. Agatha told Billy (and the audience) that the Road didn’t exist from the first mention of it. Billy assumed she was lying and, thanks to Agatha’s pre-established history in WandaVision, viewers were also lulled into this false sense of being unable to believe anything that Agatha said. Agatha, however, was truthful from the beginning.
Billy:
Take me to the Witches’ Road!Agatha:
Come again?Billy:
The Witches’ Road. I want you to take me there. Please?Agatha:
The Witches’ Road doesn’t exist.Billy:
You’re lying.Agatha:
Am I?Billy:
That’s just what real witches say to keep the amateurs out. The Road will give you the thing you want most. If you make it to the end. And I can. I will.Agatha, after some contemplating:
Hmm. The Road is no place for a kid.Billy:
I’m 16!Agatha:
Oh, sorry. Teen. I don’t know where you heard about the Road…Billy:
Books, the Ballad, legend, lore…Agatha:
But it will kill you.Billy:
Didn’t kill you.Agatha:
Well, I’m exceptional.
This entire conversation happens at the beginning of Episode 2 after Billy breaks the spell Agatha is still trapped in. This is the first serious conversation that Agatha has with Billy, and she’s truthful from the start. The Witches’ Road isn’t real. The Road is no place for a kid. The Road will kill you. All of these statements are true. The Witches’ Road isn’t real because Agatha and her son, Nicky, made it up. Agatha used the Ballad to lure gullible witches in so she could kill them and steal their power. It’s no place for a child because that would force Agatha to actively prey on a child.

Agatha All Along: Billy Maximoff’s Journey on The Witches’ Road, Explained
Agatha All Along Episode 6 delves into the reincarnated Billy Maximoff’s backstory, revealing the real reason he’s walking the Witches’ Road.
This conversation isn’t the only way Agatha All Along teased that the Witches’ Road wasn’t real, though. After viewers witness the reveal that Billy created the Road, it suddenly paints the coven conjuring the Witches’ Road door in a new light. Agatha never expected the coven to succeed, she just saw an opportunity to gather a few witches in the immediate area and steal their power. When the Ballad fails, she immediately taunts the coven, trying to prompt them to attack her. She needs their power, and she grows impatient that they don’t fall for her trick.
Most of all, she looks genuinely stunned when the door appears beneath her feet. At first, she seems surprised because she didn’t expect a few “talentless” witches to succeed in conjuring the Road. Sharon Davis isn’t even a witch. Billy creating the Road explains why the door could be conjured without a proper green witch in the coven. In reality, Agatha is shocked because the Witches’ Road isn’t real. It’s a con she’s been using for centuries, so it suddenly popping into existence doesn’t make sense. Agatha experienced this type of creation magic before, though, when Wanda took over Westview.
Agatha also makes comments while on the Road that should have clued viewers into the truth long before the reveal. When the coven first steps onto the Road, Billy says it’s just like he imagined it would be and Agatha agrees, saying it “suits him.” When they approach the house of the first trial, Agatha comments that the house is “right off your vision board.” The way the shot is framed makes it seem like she’s talking to Jennifer Kale, but she’s talking about Billy’s vision.

Agatha All Along May Have Already Given Away the Show’s Biggest Twist
Episode 4 of Disney+’s Agatha All Along dropped strong hints on whom the mysterious Teen is in his journey with Agatha and her coven of witches.
A look at Billy’s room will also clue viewers into the Road’s inspiration. Fans get to see Billy’s room a few times throughout the series, and it’s full of posters, figures, vinyl, and other collectibles that mirror the Road’s design. Episode 8 emphasizes all of Billy’s inspiration, but viewers could have strung those clues together earlier if they paid close enough attention.

Agatha:
I didn’t think you had it in you.Billy:
You didn’t think who had what in them?Agatha winks.
Lilia:
You are the magician. You have enormous potential and the ability to turn all of your goals into reality.Agatha:
Even with the sigil in the way, you and your mother have the same tell.Billy:
Which is?Agatha:
Very inconvenient for you.Agatha:
Gosh, you really are a Maximoff. Otherwise, none of this would be nearly as dramatic.Agatha:
You are so much like your mother.
Billy’s Reveal Isn’t the Only Thing Agatha All Along Hid in Plain Sight
Agatha All Along had a lot of ground to cover in nine episodes. The series needed to reveal Teen’s true identity and Rio Vidal’s true identity as well. It needed to push each member of the coven through a trial specific to their designated talents. It was a huge reveal that Billy took control of a recently deceased teenage body and that’s how he survived Wanda destroying her Westview spell. It also had the massive plot twist of Billy creating the Witches’ Road. The list goes on and on.
Still, Agatha All Along managed to connect the dots seamlessly. For example, Lilia’s divination trial in Episode 7 – “Death’s Hand in Mine” connected all of Lilia’s premonitions seamlessly and explained how her powers of divination worked. The coven and the audience thought Lilia was being possessed or talking to the dead, but she was seeing the events of her life out of order. Agatha All Along had a lot of crumbs to follow, and it succeeds in teasing most of its reveals without the audience ever even knowing.
