In a remarkable display of courage and loyalty, a herd dog named Casper faced down a pack of coyotes to protect his flock. This incident occurred at the home of John Wierwille on a chilly evening in November.
The trouble began around 9:00 PM on November 3rd, when John noticed several coyotes lurking near his property. He managed to drive them away by hurling rocks at them and shouting, hoping that would be the end of it. But later that night, the coyotes came back, more determined than before.
It was about 2:30 AM when John was suddenly awakened by the sound of barking. Rushing outside, he saw his dogs, Casper and Daisy, quickly moving the sheep into the safety of one corner of their pen. As John approached, he realized the coyotes had gotten inside the pen.
Standing boldly between the coyotes and the sheep were Casper and Daisy. John counted five or six coyotes threatening his livestock, with only his brave dogs in their way. The air was tense as the coyotes and dogs sized each other up, poised for a confrontation. Then, without hesitation, Casper charged at the coyotes to shield his herd and his human family.
“It was a bloody fight that lasted maybe around 30 minutes. John thought Casper was done but he surprised John when he continued to protect them,” describes the intense struggle that ensued. Casper’s brave action caused the coyotes to flee, but he wasn’t done yet. He pursued them to a creek embankment near the home, where the fight continued until Casper vanished from sight.
With Casper missing, worry set in. John and his neighbors organized a search party. Evidence of the fierce battle was clear: parts of Casper’s tail and traces of blood were found.
“…We thought we could find him, we thought he must have been killed and so we were looking for him,” John said. “If he wasn’t killed, we figured he was hurt, we knew he was hurt, because we found parts of his tail and blood and other things, so we were worried about him.”
Their efforts the following day led them to discover several dead coyotes, proof of Casper’s fierce defense. However, Casper himself was nowhere to be found, deepening fears for his safety.
Miraculously, two days after the incident, Casper returned home on his own. Although he was battered and bruised, he was alive. He immediately went to check on his herd, showing his undying dedication.
“He looked like death, I mean he looked terrible,” John shared. “He came back home and he just kind of looked at me like ‘boss stop looking at how bad I look, just take care of me.’”
In the aftermath, Casper received extensive medical care facilitated by Lifeline Animal Project. His injuries were severe enough to require multiple surgeries, including the amputation of his tail. Throughout his recovery, Casper received excellent care from the animal welfare organization.
John, along with the entire community, remains deeply thankful to Casper for his incredible act of bravery. Although it’s uncertain what Casper’s future holds, his courageous actions that night have left an indelible mark on the hearts of those he protected.
