FORGET downsizing – grandparents Alan and Sandra Parker are eyeing their next project after transforming a dated property into a modern beachside home.

The energetic couple, both in their 70s, have been building and renovating houses for 50 years.

Their latest Burleigh Waters project was particularly significant, being their first Queensland home after relocating from Tasmania to be near daughter, Karina, and three grandchildren, Kai, 12, Zabier, 9, and Summer O’Reilly, 7.

The four-bedroom, two-bathroom home is listed at offers over $1.895m with agent Jason Taylor, of First National Palm Beach.

The Parkers purchased the home three years ago and upgraded both interior and exterior spaces, including a new kitchen, sleek new flooring, and an inviting al fresco zone leading to the pool, all set amid landscaped grounds.

Set on a 750 sqm lot in a cul-de-sac, the property was billed as “the perfect family home” in Mr Taylor’s listing.

“[There’s] absolutely nothing to do, move in and enjoy everything this stunning home provides.”

Karina Parker said her parents’ “sheer determination” had inspired the family, with the children pitching in to help with the renovation.

“This is their ninth house,” she said.

“They married young and my dad had the foresight to buy land, build and subdivide.

“You’ve got a couple of kids who didn’t even really finish school and just through sheer determination, they’ve come from having nothing and built something wonderful.”

PropTrack modelling shows the $1.505m cost of a typical home in Broadbeach Waters is forecast to rise by $1.8m by 2029.

The Parker family said the suburb was poised for further growth as a family-friendly enclave close to fashionable Burleigh Heads, but with larger blocks in a quieter location.

“We’ve been lucky enough through our journey to be able to visualise the potential of a home,” Mr Parker said.

“Though other people walked away from this because it was so much work, I just loved the location. It was north-facing, with a beautiful sunny aspect.”

He credited his wife for taking the reins through six home builds, and three renovations.

“Sometimes it has been hard, but [Sandra] has tucked in behind me and she has a very special gift for styling,” Mr Parker said.

“Even to the architects, they’d show us the plans and she’d say, ‘not being rude, but what about changing this and that’, and they’d put it up on the screen and say, ‘yes, you’re right’.”

Sandra Parker said they would take time out to travel after the sale, but weren’t about to slow down.

“House number 10 — that’s our goal,” Mrs Parker said.

“It’s in our blood I’m afraid.

“Once you’ve done these things you think, ‘Oh, I’m glad to have a rest’. But that doesn’t last long and then you’re looking for your next project.”
